Veteran politician Makhdoom is being tipped as the new prime minister of Pakistan. He is a long time Bhutto loyalist. He is in the good book of the military, top bureaucrats and influential businessmen. They will welcome his candidature for premiership.

He is considered pro-West. He favors close military and economic ties with the United States. However, he has reservations about the way the US is carrying out attacks in Pakistan’s tribal area. If he becomes prime minister, the US will find it difficult to do things in the tribal areas. That’s why the Bush administration has reiterated it’s supported for Musharaf. Diplomatic activities going in Islamabad confirms that the US wants to install to install a man in Islamabad who can address their interests in the region.
