4 bad habits that cause dandruff

What exactly causes dandruff? Our cleaning habits, not a natural predisposition, cause unsightly white flakes. If you want to keep your scalp and hair follicles healthy, avoid the following bad habits. Dandruff can be completely avoided and treated with these simple tips.

Using too much or not enough shampoo

Shampoo’s purpose is to remove oil, dirt and chemical buildup. Most of these elements can be removed with a simple rinse, but excess buildup should be removed every two to three days. If shampoo isn’t used frequently enough, the dirt and hair products will suffocate healthy skin cells and hair follicles.

Don’t use conditioner

A proactive shampoo, used twice a week, is an efficient way to prevent and treat dandruff; look for one that contains selenium sulphide or zinc pyrithione. Another option is to condition your hair every day, no matter how frequently you shampoo it, and always after using it. The conditioner hydrates the hair and scalp while also providing vitamins and nutrients. It acts as a moisturiser for your scalp and hair, so stock up.

Do not use SPF protection

Many people forget that the skin on the scalp needs to be treated just like the rest of the body. It burns in the sun and peels easily, aggravating any pre-existing dandruff conditions. If your hair is short, you can apply sunscreen or a moisturizer directly to the scalp.

Ignore the obvious symptoms

If you have dandruff that doesn’t go away, it could be a sign of something more serious, like a fungal infection or seborrheic dermatitis, a skin disease that makes the skin flaky and itchy. Don’t let this kind of discomfort persist when you find that the shampoo treatments above can’t fix it. You need to see a dermatologist right away and get a prescription for a good and effective treatment.
