how can constipation cause postpartum pain?

Constipation can cause postpartum pain due to the pressure and strain it puts on the rectum and anus during bowel movements. Postpartum constipation is common and can cause discomfort and pain for a few days after delivery[1].

Constipation can cause abdominal pain after delivery, including lower abdominal pain, which is usually caused by afterpains, constipation, or C-section healing[4]. If you experience postpartum constipation, it is essential to drink at least eight to ten large glasses of fluid a day, eat foods such as bran, fruits, green vegetables, and whole-grain cereals and breads, and get plenty of rest every day.

A mild laxative or fiber supplement can be used if other measures do not work. Call your health care provider if you do not have a bowel movement by the third or fourth day after having your baby[3].
