What are the symptoms of CMV infection?

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus that infects people of all ages. Most people infected with CMV show no signs or symptoms

11
.
However, CMV can cause serious health problems in some babies who get the virus before birth, and in people who have a weakened immune system
6
.

Transmission

CMV is spread from an infected person in the following ways:
  • Direct contact with saliva or urine, especially from babies and young children
  • Through sexual contact
  • Through transplanted organs and blood transfusions
    9

Symptoms

CMV does not usually cause symptoms. Some people get flu-like symptoms the first time they get CMV, including:
  • A high temperature
  • Aching muscles
  • Tiredness
  • Skin rash
  • Feeling sick
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen glands
    5

Diagnosis

CMV infection may not be recognized immediately. Diagnosis of CMV infection is often unnecessary in healthy adults and children because treatment is unnecessary. However, doctors consider the possibility of CMV infection in the following people:
  • Otherwise healthy people who have symptoms of mononucleosis that do not go away
  • People who have weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or who have had an organ transplant

CMV Infection in Pregnancy

If a pregnant woman is infected with CMV, she can pass it to her developing baby. This is called congenital CMV, and it can cause birth defects and other health problems
3
.
Women can be tested for CMV prior to pregnancy, and if a woman has been exposed to a recent CMV infection, it is recommended that she wait until her CMV IgM antibody levels decline to an undetectable level, and her CMV IgG avidity index climbs to a highly favorable percentage, before trying to conceive
12
.

CMV Test During Pregnancy

It is not recommended that doctors routinely test pregnant women for CMV infection. This is because laboratory tests cannot predict which developing babies will become infected with CMV or have long-term health problems
3
.
However, sometimes a pregnant woman will need to be tested for CMV when an ultrasound catches abnormalities that could be caused by CMV or another infectious disease

In conclusion, CMV infection is a common virus that can cause serious health problems in some people. CMV can be transmitted through direct contact with saliva or urine, sexual contact, and transplanted organs and blood transfusions. Flying Just Got a Lot More Expensive — and Tariffs Are Only the Beginning

As trade tensions escalate between major economies, new tariff uncertainties are weighing heavily on airlines. The consequences will ripple far beyond boardrooms and airfields: travelers should expect higher ticket prices, fewer route options, and a possible reshaping of the global aviation landscape. Immediate Impacts: Airlines Navigate a New Set of Risks In the short term, airlines are grappling with a complex mix of operational challenges: First, the aircraft supply chain is under pressure. Trade disputes between the United States, the European Union, and China have complicated the procurement of new planes. Manufacturers like Boeing, Airbus, and China's state-backed COMAC are caught in the middle, creating delays and pricing uncertainty for carriers ( Reuters ). Fuel markets are similarly volatile. Airlines typically hedge fuel prices months in advance to avoid sudden cost spikes. However, unpredictable shifts in global oil prices—driven in part by trade instability—are u...

Why U.S. Tech Giants Are Betting Big on Canadian AI?

Why U.S. Tech Giants Are Betting Big on Canadian AI Imagine this: the most powerful tech companies in the world—Google, Meta, Microsoft—are betting their futures not just in Silicon Valley, but thousands of miles north, in the snowy cities of Canada. Strange, right? Why would billion-dollar U.S. tech giants rely so heavily on Canadian AI labs? What do Canadian researchers have that the tech capitals of California don’t? And could this quiet dependence shift the global tech balance? Let’s dive into a story of brainpower, policy, and a silent AI revolution that began long before most of us even knew what AI was. The Roots of Canada's AI Advantage To understand why U.S. tech titans are now so deeply entwined with Canada’s AI ecosystem, we need to go back to the early days of AI research—in the 1980s and '90s. At that time, the initial hype around artificial intelligence had faded. Funding was drying up globally, and many dismissed AI, especially deep learning, as a dead en...
