Menstrual cycle related chest pain. What is this? Is it dangerous?

 Chest pain related to the menstrual cycle is a common symptom that occurs in a predictable pattern related to the menstrual cycle

 This type of chest pain is also called mastalgia and usually happens during the luteal phase (after ovulation and before the period) and resolves once the period starts

 Cyclical breast/chest pain is typically experienced at particular times each menstrual cycle, and with specific symptoms such as aching, heavy, and tender breasts/chest, but the pain can also feel sharp or shooting

 However, in rare cases, chest pain during menstruation can be a symptom of a more serious condition such as thoracic endometriosis or spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD)

 Thoracic endometriosis is a rare condition in which endometrial tissue grows inside your chest cavity, in or around your lungs, and can cause chest pain and shortness of breath around the time of your period

 SCAD is a type of heart attack that occurs when a tear forms in one of the blood vessels in the heart, and chest pain most often occurs 1 to 2 days prior to menstruation

If you experience chest pain during your menstrual cycle, it is important to consult a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of the pain

 In general, for relief, you can try supportive bras, warm or cold compresses, massage, medications, herbs and supplements, diet changes, and/or meditation

Remember that chest pain can also be a symptom of a heart attack, so it is important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain that is severe, lasts longer than a few minutes, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness
