The term "love jihad" was first used in a 2009 judicial order of the Kerala High Court to describe Muslim boys pretending to fall in love with Hindu or Christian girls in an attempt to convert them
. The concept of "love jihad" plays on age-old hostilities between the Hindus and Muslims. The term was later legitimized by a 2009 Karnataka high court order which asked for a joint investigation by the Karnataka and Kerala police into the "love jihad movement". The term has since spread to other parts of India and has been widely criticized as Islamophobic and divisive.
