Over-the-Counter Treatments for Diaper Rash

There are several over-the-counter treatments available for diaper rash. Here are some options:

  • Zinc oxide ointment: This is the first-line therapy for diaper dermatitis and is available in most drugstores. It creates a barrier between the diaper and the skin, protecting the skin from moisture and irritants

  • Hydrocortisone cream: This is a mild steroid cream that can be used to reduce inflammation and itching. It is available in 0.5% to 1% strength and should be used for a short period of time, usually 3 to 5 days. If the rash doesn't go away with home treatment, your healthcare provider might suggest a mild hydrocortisone cream

  • Diaper rash creams: There are several diaper rash creams available in drugstores, such as Desitin Maximum Strength Diaper Rash Paste, Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment, and Boudreaux's Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment. Remember to always follow the instructions on the product label and consult with your healthcare provider if the rash doesn't improve or gets worse despite home treatment. Additionally, to prevent diaper rash, change dirty diapers as soon as possible, and thoroughly clean your baby. Use a barrier ointment or paste to protect the skin from further injury while creating an optimal environment to allow the skin to heal. It will also help prevent friction from the diaper. Allow your baby's skin to air-dry before reapplying a diaper. Limit contact of urine and stool with the skin by changing the diaper frequently
