  The Mau Mau rebellion, also known as the Mau Mau uprising, was a war in the British Kenya Colony between the Kenya Land and Freedom Army, also known as the Mau Mau, and the British authorities 1 .   The rebellion began in 1952 as a reaction to inequalities and injustices in British-controlled Kenya 2 .   The British authorities responded with a fierce crackdown on the rebels, resulting in many deaths 2 .   The British used various techniques to suppress the rebellion, including mass detention, military operations, and propaganda campaigns 5 7 9 .   The British also destroyed the Mau Mau movement by arranging operations that isolated insurgent fighters from their support 7 .   The British declared a state of emergency in October 1952 and began moving army reinforcements into Kenya 11 .   By the end of 1956, more than 11,000 rebels had been killed in the fighting, along with about 100 Europeans and 2,000 African loyalists 10 .   The British also p...
