The birthrate in European countries has been declining in recent years. According to Eurostat data, the birth rate across the European Union hit a 60-year low of 4 million births in 2020, with an average of 1.5 births per person 11 . However, there has been a slight increase in the number of births in the EU since 2020, with 4.09 million babies born in 2021, marking the first increase in the number of births since 2016 2 . The total fertility rate, which is the average number of children a woman is projected to have over her lifetime, has also been declining in Europe. It steadily declined from the mid-1960s through to the turn of the century in the EU Member States.
