Hemophilia is a rare, hereditary bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. It is caused by a mutation or change in one of the genes that provides instructions for making the clotting factor proteins needed to form a blood clot 2 . Hemophilia occurs in two sub-types: hemophilia A and hemophilia B. In hemophilia A, there is a lack or total absence of coagulation factor VIII 1 . symptoms The most common symptom of hemophilia is bleeding, particularly into the joints and muscles. When a person with hemophilia is injured, they do not bleed faster than a person without hemophilia, but it takes longer for bleeding to stop. Bleeding may start again several days after an injury or surgery. Small cuts or surface bruises usually are not a problem, but deeper injuries may result in bleeding episodes that can lead to permanent disability unless they are treated promptly.
